Description

Join us at the Driftless Fiber Arts Collective for a Tuesday Talk featuring writer and organizer Josina Manu Maltzman at 6:30 pm on Tuesday, January 13th.

Josina Manu Maltzman (all pronouns) is a writer, carpenter, and organizer who believes we all have a role to play in ending genocide and settler colonialism. Josina is published in several anthologies and won the 2025 Plentitudes Prize in Nonfiction. For more please visit their website www.josinamanumaltzman.com

Josina received a MN State Arts Board grant to promote their new chapbook essay "Ride Safe: One dyke's journey to healing from the West Bank to the West Coast."  The essay is framed around a series of solo motorcycle trips Josina took starting in 2005 and wrestles with three primary questions: What is "safety"? How does one's positionality inform when and how a person feels safe? And what is our individual role in community safety? You can read or listen to the full essay on Josina’s website, and Josina will be bringing copies of the chapbook on tour.

About Tuesday Talks:

Driftless Fiber Arts Collective hosts monthly Tuesday Talks, opportunities to hear from local folks about local happenings, initiatives, opportunities and more. All Tuesday talks are free and open to the public. Driftless Fiber Arts Collective’s purpose is to extend Lanesboro, Minnesota’s status as an Art Campus, cultivating a communal learning space and engaging creative exploration of craft, words, and games.

Questions? Have an item of interest for a future Tuesday? Email us at driftlessfiberartscollective@gmail.com.

This Tuesday Talk will follow Josina's workshop "We Keep Us Safe" from 4 - 6 pm on Tuesday, Jan 13th at DFAC:

What is safety? How do our histories and experiences inform when and how we feel safe? What are the systems in place that are meant to keep us safe, and how do they fail us? In this session we’ll read from authors such as Joy Harjo and Roxane Gay, use writing prompts to explore our personal relationship to safety, and look at tools to help strengthen our networks to promote personal and community safety. The session is led by Josina Manu Maltzman, author of “Ride Safe,” and a core member of Relationships Evolving Possibilities (REP), a community safety project in the Twin Cities.
