About Us
Nestled on Bench Street in Whalan, the Whalan Ball Field is more than just a softball and baseball diamond—it’s a centerpiece of community life and Bluff Country heritage. For decades this field has hosted the annual Whalan Fast-Pitch Softball Tournament, a tradition launched in 1970 by Gene Johnson. Over time, this beloved event was inducted into the Minnesota Softball Hall of Fame in 2017, recognizing its enduring significance to players, families, and spectators alike.
The ball field draws visitors of all ages, especially in summer, when bleachers fill with long-time residents and first-time visitors alike. Lawn chairs dot the sidelines, kids play in nearby parks, friends reconnect, and the smell of concessions marks “something special happening.” Even though tournament participation and crowd sizes have fluctuated over time, the spirit and nostalgia remain strong. Families pass down memories here, and the field remains a place where tradition and community meet.
Located in the 900 block of Bench Street (Whalan), the field is easy to reach—perfectly positioned for those biking or driving through Bluff Country. Whether you’re stopping by to catch a game, enjoy a tournament weekend, or simply soak in small-town culture, Whalan Ball Field offers a warm, authentic slice of local life.
